Philosophy of Time
78" Like the vastness of an oasis where the level of underground
water rises up to join the surface; where nature and beauty flourishes with
growth, so too is the place where our souls are replenished.
Like a mirage, time is an illusion; a reflection of the past, an experience of
the present. A rarity on occasion a glimpse of our dreams of what may come. Seize the moment NOW as all good things must
come to an end. For in time this too
shall pass.” by Sage Williams
Time is one of those words that has always intrigued me. There are millions of ways to define time that is in terms of linguistically speaking, which I will explore throughout. But have you ever really, really, wondered about, the concept of time. Go ahead, try to explain it. What is time? I've pondered this questions many times in my life.
Dating back to the Stone Age, the Mayas were known to have acquired an exactness in measuring time. They were captivated and endlessly devoted to the calculation and passage of time. Many of us today are familiar with the Mayan Calendar and its mysterious predictions that follow in regards to December 21, 2012 which marks the end of a 5,126-year era.
There are many legends that speak about hummingbirds, who float free of time, carrying our hopes, dreams love and joy. The hummingbird is symbolically known as a messenger a stopper of time.
Moving on in time there were many hypotheses known
as the ‘Theories of Time’ by famous scientists and philosophers, like Sir Isaac
Newton and Albert Einstein.
Exploring further we get to view the world in relation to time. The world has what is known as Time Zones. There are time zones for different locations of the world. Universal Time (UT) is a timescale which is based on the rotation of the Earth a continuation of Greenwich Mean Time or (GMT). There is Standard Time, Pacific Time, Eastern Time etc.etc
It gets deeper and deeper and more complex as we get into what is known as s Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)[1] an atomic time scale based on international Atomic Time. Far to complicated at this point in time for me.
I will gladly turn this over to Professor Brian Cox, (you tube video to the right), who does a really awesome exploration into the scientific aspects and philosophy of What is time?
To the right below is the Encarta Dictionary: English (North American)
Definition of time.
The Semantics of Time
Here today, gone tomorrow and this very moment in time, shall pass. Not only am I intrigued about the very concept of time. I am also fascinated with the million different ways this word can be used.
There are seasons of the year we refer to as springtime, summertime, and wintertime.
In many customs the New Year brings out father time; a representation of the previous year (usually an image of an old man"), who is depicted handing over the duties of time to the Baby New Year (or "the New Year").
There are countless words and phrases depicting time such as
anytime, sometimes, most of the time, morning time, long time, short time,
endless time, till next time, Time will tell, time heals all, take your
time etc. The list goes on and on.
The business sectors of the world refer to time well managed as Time Management. We are all well aware of the great economic times also referred to as financial times.
Some have capitalized on the word, by using it in their business slogans, such as the famous Dunkin Doughnuts commercial, "Time to make the Doughnuts!
There are Famous magazines and newspapers such as; Time Magazine and the New York
Times. Time is of the Essence, a legal phrase used in a contract.
As I’m writing this I have become mindfully aware of my voice beginning to have that same chant, the rhythm and beat of the well known cranky commentary, Andy Rooney from 60 Minutes. Having said that, I realize that I had better be careful as I just may be dating myself. Andy Rooney and 60 minutes have been with us for a long period of time.
Quotes About Time
There has been a myriad of quotes written about time. Here a few of my personal favorites
"Realize that now, in this moment of time, you are creating. You are creating your next moment. That is what's real." ~Sara Paddison
"Time is like the wind, it lifts the light
and leaves the heavy."
~Doménico Cieri Estrada
"The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough.
~Rabindranath Tagore
"Let your life lightly dance on the edges of Time like dew on the tip of a leaf." ~Rabindranath Tagore
"Time is the most undefinable yet paradoxical of things; the past is gone, the future is not come, and the present becomes the past even while we attempt to define it, and, like the flash of lightning, at once exists and expires." ~Charles Caleb Colton
"What then is time? If no one asks me, I know what it is. If I wish to explain it to him who asks, I do not know." ~Saint Augustine
"Time, the cradle of hope.... Wisdom walks before it, opportunity with it, and repentance behind it: he that has made it his friend will have little to fear from his enemies, but he that has made it his enemy will have little to hope from his friends." ~Charles Caleb Colton
"There is one kind of robber whom the law does not strike at, and who steals what is most precious to men: time." ~Napoleon I, Maxims, 1815
Nobody sees a flower - really - it is so small it takes time
- we haven't time - and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time." Georgia O'Keefe
"Time is an equal opportunity
employer. Each human being has exactly the same number of hours and
minutes every day. Rich people can't buy more hours. Scientists
can't invent new minutes. And you can't save time to spend it on another
day. Even so, time is amazingly fair and forgiving. No matter how
much time you've wasted in the past, you still have an entire tomorrow."
~Denis Waitely
"Time you enjoyed wasting is not wasted time."
~T. S. Elliot
"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace." ~Ecclesiastes (ch. III, v. 1-8)

My Personal Time
My personal all time favorite is relishing in the moment. Carving out a
particular segment of time to indulge in solitude; to listen with an open heart, to cultivate my awareness and to go deep, deep within to replenish
my soul. There is no time like the present for reflection.
An inner sanctuary of harmony and bliss; a familiar time that may be experienced often but may never be replicated or experienced in the exact same way, for this too shall pass. It is however, recognizable as a familiar space in time and if this is the best that it can be, than let it be. For this is my personal relationship with Time.
To one and all, enjoy your 'Time'.

What a thought provoking and well written hub. It is a wonderful article on time and it makes you reflect on your own views on time and how to use each precious moment. Excellent hub.
I wanted to read this but I just didn't have the time!
I was only foolin'. This is a great hub. Thank you for some great research and work. So many definitions. Great videos. Thank you.
You took the TIME!
As a philosopher- there is no time, it is only a construct of our minds and how we must structure our world-view. When people say it is all about "here and now" this is really it. No-time universe- that is us. Space exploration and parallel universes shall teach us more about time- and how it might be manipulated. There are other dimensions that do not deal with time.
Let your life lightly dance on the edges of Time like dew on the tip of a leaf." ~Rabindranath Tagore
I loved that one most and I like this hub and the message it brings--- Thank you and happy weekend Sage, Maita
What a nice thought provoking article; I enjoyed reading it.
Beautiful and so many things to think about. We all think time is of the essence or that we are 'out of time' but time is one of those things - like life - what you make of it! My biggest failing is to make time for myself but am trying to be better about that particular thing. Thanks for all the inspiration!

Compromising question that of your hub´s title. The quotes on time are wonderful, this one I liked a lot: "Realize that now, in this moment of time, you are creating. You are creating your next moment. That is what's real." ~Sara Paddison
For me, Time is an ever present moment in constant renovation.
Great and interesting hub!
Thumbs up!
Warmest regards and blessings in the NOW, my friend,

Great Hub. You did your research!
I like this one as well, I am a Catholic hehe

and I mark this hub so that when I come back I can look at it again, Maita
Great hub, Sage! I love your time "capsule" (no pun intended!) with all the definitions...Excellent piece!
Very well written. One of those hubs that make you think for awhile. Thanks.
You should follow me and read some of my hubs.
The very moment we ask the question, "What is time?", we are committing a logical fallicy; for time is NOT a "what", but a "when".
The proper question is, "WHEN is time?"
Then we can answer more effectively with another question, "when is time for what?", meaning "how specifically do we move in a successsion of rhythmic moments?"
Once, we confront the question, "when is time for what?", we can answer with an action, such as "time to play", "time to love", "time to dance".
A proper interrogative interaction with the concept of time, then, gets us moving, which is what time is -- MOTION in harmony with the rhythms of human anatomy.
Robert
Interesting read, do think time is moving in a linear or circular direction? Meaning its effect on humans as a progression of their lives forward, or in circumspect, returning to the beginning as one begets understanding of the self? Can one ever return the amount of time given to their existence ?
Hi Sage, "Time I have been passing time watching dreams go by, all of my life, lying on the sand watching seabirds fly, thats your assignement SAGE find who sung that song, HEHE, Maita
Time is now a gift to me, finally. Loved your poem.
I suppose that as the famous three score years and ten rapidly approach me I find myself thinking more and more about time and what it means. In fact I started a Hub on time at the time of my 66th birthday two months ago but abandoned it - it felt rather pretentious! I will no doubt have another go at it sometime soon.
Thanks for this great read.
Love and peace
Tony
LOL< you got it hehe, thats easy next time I will make it difficult, Maita
Wow- brilliant article Sage, very deep. It really made me think. Also I love this- "Let your life lightly dance on the edges of Time like dew on the tip of a leaf' my new favourite quote. Great work! Thanks for sharing Sage :)
I love this hub and the quots you posted are great. The obsession we all have with time makes us fight it rather than enjoy it. If the Mayans are right we have little time left, but still a chance to make the best of it.
Thank you for a great read
My time is precious as is all of ours being granted only so many days on this planet...but I am glad I spent several minutes here learning to appreciate what time I have left.
Great hub...timeless~~~MFB III
Time is so vast a subject spatio-temporally that it has grabbed the ideas of both scientists and philosophers, very well written article...
(I am on the RedGage by the name of Kayzzaman - I spotted you here.)
Hi, Sage, I got here eventually! Thats the trouble with time, there is never enough of it in the day!! I would just like to say that, time is even stranger when you go into space. For example, if you went in a space ship at the speed of light or faster, for two years, and then came back, the earth would have aged about sixty years... Einsteins law etc. how weird is that? and if you fell into a black hole in space, if you survived!, which you wouldn't, but if you did, you would look like you were not moving at all, because of the gravitational pull. So you would think you were hurtling to your doom, and your friends would be saying, don't worry, they are not even moving! Time is very strange, and I liked your hub. Great. thanks nell
Sage Williams this is beautiful. I only recently begain to think about time and how fast it vanishes, and since I am older I have wonder where my time went, what did I do that was worth doing and did I do it properly and with courage. I realize I have wasted percious time that cannot be lived again and I think that is why I write these articles.
Thank you for sharing and I am glad I found your hubs.
Absolutely beautiful is the only way to describe this hub! You added your magical touch to an entity we take for granted, and turned it into something meant to be cherished.
'Carving out a particular segment of time to indulge in solitude; to listen with an open heart....an inner sanctuary of harmony and bliss...' I simply loved these lines! And the quotes were so carefully and tastefully selected! Pure joy to read... :)
Loved it, especially 'my personal time'. Personally i believe time is an illusion. There is only one eternal now. If time existed then where did it begin? And if eternity exists then how can you have time? Time implies a beginning and an end, but pure consciousness is eternal.
This is so beautiful, Sage. I just spent my time very wisely reading this hub! Here's my favorite quote about time by Shunryu Suzuki, "Time and space are one. This moment the swinging door is opening in one direction, and the next moment the swinging door will be open in the opposite direction. When you mind is pure and calm, there is no "I", no world, no mind or body; just a swinging door."
Thank you for this very cool and timely hub! I received very meditational and peaceful emotions from reading it.
I always enjoy your hubs. They are each one like a gift. This one is no exception.
I love this quote best of all..
"The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough.
~Rabindranath Tagore
Sage, you always give me something to think about. Time can be your best friend and your worst enemy. There seems to be less of it these days.
The most real feel of time “the present” is infinitesimal. It cannot be measured. Measurement of time is mostly an afterthought. Time also has similarity to recording devices where “the present” resembles the sharp recording point like laser and past is comparable to the recorded material while future is the unrecorded portion. In this way past is just a memory. Similar thoughts were expressed by Mc Taggart when he described the similarity between written history and stories in their time characteristics suggesting that past is just like recorded material.

Wonderful article, um Time only means to me that my hair is going white. Yes, I am follow the mayan, as well as the Hopi and the egeptiams. All state comment of the end of their calenders of 2012. The Hopi say that we are leaving the fourth deminsion and everything will end, and a new, then the fifth deminsion will start anew. Thank you so much for this awesome hub
