Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir | Lux Aurumque
76Well known accomplished conductor, composer and lecturer, Eric Whitacre has found an innovative way to bring together a choir from around the world.
The choral music of Eric Whitacre and the "Virtual Choir" has captured the audience of the entire world. The choral music has gone viral, so to speak.
By combining his sensational musical composition, "Sleep"; a harmonic poetic renaissance style composition, combined with 21st century technology and live video of each individual singer, he has created a Virtual Choir.
People from all walks of life around the world, joined together, singing with passion from the depths of their heart. A symphony of melodic voices resonates; through live footage of each singer creating an atmospheric masterpiece of love and emotional catharsis.
A love so deep, enriched with purity, filling your being with a vibrancy that awakens your spirit, opens your heart and touches the very center of your core; it will quite possibly move you to tears.
Social Media Experiment Blossoms
What started out as being a social media experiment has blossomed into a Virtual Choir 0f 185 people from around the world.
How did this all begin? A year ago one of Eric's friends had emailed him a link from you tube. The link was a recording of of a young girl named Britlin Losees who was an admirable fan of Eric's. She delivered a message to Eric in a you tube video, appraising him for his composition, Sleep; an acappella choral composition that Eric wrote in 2000.
Lyrics to Sleep | Eric Whitacre
The evening hangs beneath the moon
A silver thread on darkened dune
With closing eyes and resting head
I know that sleep is coming soon
Upon my pillow, safe in bed
A thousand pictures fill my head
I cannot sleep my minds a flight
And yet my limbs seem made of lead
If there are noises in the night
A frighting shadow, flickering light
Then I surrender unto sleep
Where clouds of dreams give second sight
What dreams may come both dark and deep
Of flying wings and soaring leap
As I surrender unto sleep
As I surrender unto sleep
Britlin feeling deeply moved by his music, felt compelled to send him a message and made a video for him. In her introduction she explains how this music has touched her in a very profound and unique way. She hopes that when she composes she will be able to sing with the deeply felt passion and emotion which she feels. In her video message, Britlin sings the soprano part to Sleep.
Britlin's singing message ignited a creative spark in Eric's thoughts. He thought, if 100 different people recorded their perspective part, such as tenor, alto, soprano and bass then he would be able to create a virtual choir.
With this thought in mind he posted an add on his facebook page to all his fans inviting them to audition for a new you tube choir. There was no age requirement. He asked people to submit a short introduction of themselves regarding past choral experiences, musical education etc. He also asked that they perform a scale demonstrating their vocal ranges.
He then asked everyone to purchase the recording of Sleep at iTunes, which was an astounding performance by the fabulous British choir Polyphony.
He asked that singers make a video of themselves, singing their individual parts such as, alto, tenor, soprano or bass and upload it to you tube. It was then composed by Eric Whitacre and produced by Scott Haines.
