Discovering Wisdom through Creative Writing and Mindfulness Meditation
72The concept for writing this article was to share a first hand experience which I encountered as a result of using mindful meditation while writing in flow.
This article is a continuation from: Mindfulness Meditation and Creative Writing Techniques. You may want to read that hub first to fully understand and learn more about combining these two creative techniques.
Writing in flow is just one form of creative writing. There are numerous other writing styles and techniques. The internet is a great resource for writing workshops that offer online writing courses.
I myself, have learned these writing techniques from reading books and attending several creative writing classes at a writing workshop with, well known author, Natalie Goldberg.
My two favorite books on this particular subject are, "Writing in Flow" by Susan K. Perry and "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg.
Inspiring Moments
The inspiration for this article was the result of a revelation, born in the moment while commenting on another hubber's hub on Hubpages.
The title of the hub that I was
reading at the time was 'Getting older and the Power of the Mind by
Violet Sun, also known as Marie. If you haven't already read it,
please be sure to check it out. It may inspire you as it did me!
Marie, (Violet Sun) is an exceptional inspirational writer with a passion for life. Marie's writing will put you in touch with your inner child as she see's life as a playground. Her connection with nature and her zealous spirit of playfulness shine throughout.
While I was reading Marie's hub I was mindful of a growing smile on my face. I became aware of a warm, tender feeling in my heart with sensations of excitability throughout my being.
Writing in Flow begins....
Upon finishing reading and
without hesitation my fingers began to fly across the keyboard I had
entered into my usual writer's 'zone' (aka, creative dissociative state) and began writing in flow.
As many of you may already know, there is no thought process involved when you are writing in flow. Having said that, let me clarify, there is no thought process required to write what you are writing, when you write in flow.
However, when you are practicing mindfulness meditation techniques along with your writing, it is important that you are still mindful of any thoughts that enter your conscious mind. (therefore, creative dissociation is more like a semi conscious state).
Opening Yourself up to the Universe
What is great about writing in flow and using mindfulness meditation techniques is, it allows you to remain mindful and open to the present moment as it unfolds right before your eyes. Your unconscious mind picks up on it and Voila! You have stumbled upon an aha moment that just may flow through your writing onto your page.
It is through, 'being' in these magical states of mind which allows you to be open to the universe and receive messages that your conscious mind may not fully realize. In other words, revelations are free to be born. You may not realize that you have stumbled upon a revelation until you consciously refocus and reread what you have written. Some times, it may be hours, days or even much longer depending on how long it takes to process.
Getting back to my response to Marie's hub. Somewhere in the middle of my response writing from my creative zone, I wrote;

“The mind is truly a powerful vessel and depending on which way you choose to think will determine whether you take the high road, the low road or a detour.”
At this point I was aware of a tiny fleeting thought, (where am I going with this?) as quickly as the thought had entered my conscious, it was acknowledged for a split second and immediately released by bringing my awareness back to to my fingertips on the keyboard.
Being well disciplined, this process has become second nature and
is barely noticeable in the moment. I am simply mindful of it happening.
Once you have mastered this meditation technique, you become fine tuned and it pretty much happens on it's own. I don't mean to simplify this process. It takes a lot of patience, practice and discipline to get to this point.
My response went on to say, “Just recently, my life took a detour. Needless to say, I have had some down time due to an injury (pretty much the whole summer). The positive side to all of this is. My life has slowed down immensely"
Aha Moments!
(Again, please note, at this point I am still writing in flow therefore, I could not fully appreciate the depth of what I had written until it was processed on a more conscious level.)
(my aha moment!) "Perhaps not using my brakes on my roller blades in that split second and plunging to the ground was the universe's way of symbolically showing me that I in fact needed to stop abruptly and take a good look at the direction that my life was going in. It literally grounded me."
"It has allowed me to do some soul searching as well as reestablishing a deeper connection to my mind, body and spirit.
Mindfulness based stress reduction (mbsr) techniques as well as positive thoughts and attitudes has given me great strength in dealing with my pain."
"Yes, it's no big secret that we all are getting older. But I must say that deep inside I am feeling younger than ever and when I look in the mirror I must say that my reflection seems to be glowing. The mind is a powerful tool, which feeds the body and nourishes the spirit and soul."

Revelations are Born out of Wisdom and Insight
The realization of, 'the universe's symbolism,' was a revelation born in the moment that just came out in my response to Marie's hub while writing in flow from a mindful state of being. Experiences like this are what I refer to as, 'Aha Moments! Aha Moments are full of wisdom and insight. They are valuable, rewarding experiences, that validate our being. I have always been grateful for these moments. I cherish each and every one of them.
Living mindfully and being open is a way of being fully awake moment to moment embracing life as it unfolds. Being mindful is essential to our mind, body and spirit's connection to the universe.
When we live mindfully with these connections from a non-judgmental state of mind we truly feel alive and present, the moment takes on a magical power. Life is in the here and now. With practice we become mindfully aware of waking up to each new moment. Our life is enriched by inner peace and meaningful rewards

Thank you Sage, for a very informative and enlightening hub on creative writing and mindfulness meditation, thank you for sharing. Godspeed. creativeone59
Oh Sage, I cannot begin to tell you how much this meant to me. I had to take a couple of weeks away from writing, due to a wonderful visit from my daughter. Now that she has gone home I was in the dumpster... I just went back to bed after she left. My water heater was broken and that added to my dumps, because a nice hot shower is reviving, but a cold one is depressing, unless it's voluntary. I almost went back to bed today, but then I decided to go through the ever mounting e-mail, and saw you'd been writing. Nothing like seeing that to awaken my spirit, then the hub was just about how I was feeling, unable to find the mood to write in. I need an Aha moment and here it is. I'm going to read the hub again, and then the one by "Violet". Thanks Sage, for coming to my emotional rescue, yet again...
Sage: My heart was warmed when I read Faybe Bay's comments; you inspire as well, so thank you for this! :)
Hi, Sage, this was really interesting, I do sometimes go into the zone, but not fully. The one time I did was amazing, I had written a letter to somebody and had the typewriter, an old electric one in front of me, and out of nowhere a poem just flowed through me and onto the page! I have no idea where it came from, and was surprised by the result. great hub, cheers nell
Meditation is a great way to slow down things. Even for 5 or 10 minutes - it can make a difference. Life can be intense when working all the time, and we can be more tired than we realise. In those quiet relaxing moments, the thoughts can flow more easily. We can see things clearer, with no interruptions or obstructions. It is hard to make time to push back against the "flow" of everyday life, but it's great when we can do it.
As a kid, I always kept a journal, and did my diary right up into the present. I find it a great way to take some scant minutes out of life to jot down a thought or note or idea. Writing is a habit, and we should make it a habit, if possible. It cannot ever be bad for us.
What I also find I need is someone I can bounce ideas off when needed. Some ideas can't develop on their own and need "help". Great hub. Cheers!
I love this hub, Sage. I've been thinking a lot about what my mindset is when I'm able to express myself successfully and creatively. I can somehow get myself into that imaginative world, like the one I had when I was a child before "life" got in the way. I used to spend hours in a forest behind my neighbors house and I can still remember how the world looked and felt then. I try to put myself back there, it really is almost like a meditative state. That's where my best writing originates. Anyway, nicely done hub.
I love this hub, good topic selection. But personally "writing in flow" is my type to make good hub. I love my imagination flow like a river. Very inspiring hub. I learn much from you. You still my favorite hubber. Vote up as usual.

Hi Sage, Good you're back my friend and this hub is always the kind of hub you will write - simply soothing to the mind and kind of like I want to try it. I agree with you, meditation helps a lot and it simply make you creative, Take care and keep on writing, Be well, Maita
I love this! What a great way to exercise your inner self and allow it to really inform you of what's going on inside you. This practice sounds like it's great for your spiritual side as well as for loosening up the old brain.
Enjoyed reading this hub. Voted up as both "awesome" and "beautiful." Love the pictures, which enhance the overall experience of your hub, and magnify the effects of your words. Thanks!
I engage in a spiritual creativity practice that is responsible for my writing a book this past year, and keeps me generating new material each day! It also inspires me toward creative endeavors in other areas of my life, too. :0) Hooray for mindfulness and meditation...and openness of heart. The wooded labyrinth on the property of my co-housing community is such a blessing to me.
Oh how true. This is the main reason I'm so grateful to be a writer. It makes me a more thoughtful and mindful mother, partner, daughter, sibling, friend and neighbor to reflect and carefully consider what I deliver to the public.
What a great topic. I love discovering wisdom through creative writing and mindfulness meditation. Peace and Love :)
Sage, This hub is wonderful and so helpful. I started writing when my health problems increased, particularly I get asthmatic bronchitis frequently, so I don't always feel really awful but am too short of breath for activity, thus the writing started. As you know I write many medical technical articles and have been thinking for sometime about moving into some fiction or other types of writing more often and this hub inspires me to do just that. I never have writers block as topics are endless in my opinion, but I think the technique you described would definitely open new doors. Thanks.
Meditation is a great way to open your mind to creativity and helps you focus. Excellent hub, and advice that I will certainly entertain. Voted up, marked useful, awesome, bookmarked and shared.
"Aha Moments" or I call it serendipity. I like that. I had actually learned some valuable decisions as a result of this momentary pop-ups from my mind. Thanks for glorifying this most often unnoticed "aha" state of the mind. You're a fine writer. This is well-written and a good sharing. Thank you.
Your mediative writing reminds of the very first technique I learned in school about writing--"free writing." Writing whatever comes to your mind but yours go a step further. Thanks for the tips. Rated useful.
Hey Sage, my tax accountant wondered why I wanted to deduct my bathroom and I said because I get most of my great ideas there. Just kidding, but I do find when I slow down and get in a quiet place it is easier to write. Although chocolate is a great runner-up. Thanks for the reminder and hope you are roller blading again soon. =:)
I love to discover wisdom through creative writing and writing in flow. I do that some times, after an incident triggered my thoughts and inspired me. It often happens when I am home alone, with quietness.
At other times, I like to do factual writings, after doing much research.
I am bookmarking this to read it again. Reading your writing is soothing to the soul.
She is one of my favorite authors in Shambhala Magazine when I used to subscribe to it. How wonderful that you had a chance to be in her workshops.
I did read that book Writing Down the Bones. Beautiful and inspiring hub. Thank you for sharing.
Dear Sage, I am so happy to read this and I deeply understand, that is why I really don't do product writing, some folk will write only about the advertisers products. I love that flow of an idea and then giving birth to it. Something you see, feel or touch, the senses you know, I really love this hub and I really really miss you, I have seen you in a long time and I rate this up peace and love darski
wonderful and inspiring, thanks so much for sharing
Informative hub , thanks.
Hi Sage, I enjoyed this reminder to write when the mind is ready. Rollerblades? Cool. Good to see you glowing and flowing again. All my best. =:)
I really enjoyed this hub Sage - You have such a positive energy that is the essence of writing creatively and why sometimes I am able to write so passionately without stopping - other times, I am just not there & I can't write a word!
I look forward to learning more, especially about some of your meditation techniques! Thank you for sharing this very powerful insight.
I enjoyed reading your article; I found it interesting and informative.
i am almost a fan of meditation as i mentioned but your way of acknowledgement gave me a new criteria also.....go on writing and thanks!
wow this hub is capturing the attention of readers because of the freshness of the subject that never dies out. Wisdom through creative writing is very real, and have discovered myself from writing, creatively, and journals. Once I started the process I found myself discovering answering to questions about myself.
Very good advice, writing with the flow, allowing your mind to harness the wisdom that can come during moments of quiet. Thanks for sharing and rated up.
Beautiful hub! I love writing in the zone--and you describe it so well--

Sage: I have been wanting to learn how to write not only when I am inspired but to be able to connect to inspiration even when I am not feeling particularly inspired. I am thrilled you shared how to do mindful writing, will try it! If we step out of the way, Spirit takes over and we write from a different place other than the mind.
Can't wait to try your techniques, I have been asking for a better way to write so I can be more productive with writing and here you are writing the perfect article for me. The universe is perfect!
Thank you so much for the mention of my hub, and your reaction and process.
Will share your hub in Facebook as well as Tweet it.
